SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team held its second intrasquad meet Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex where the red team outlasted the black squad, 146-135.
"I thought we swam much better than in the first Red and Black meet, so we are moving in the right direction," said second-year Aztec head coach Mike Shrader. "Overall, I am very pleased with our performance today."
The 17-event meet got underway with the 200 medley relay as the red team jumped out to an early lead with Kelsy Diener, Lisa Tompkins, Elisabeth Krueger and Stephanie Henderson finishing ahead of the pack.
Krueger went on to pace the red squad with three individual victories. The Erlangen, Germany, native claimed top honors in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. Diener chipped in with first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke, while sophomore co-captain Noelle Holland rounded out Red's winners, capturing the 200 fly.
Jeanette Engzell, Ashley Flynn and Brooke Vessey were all double-winners for the black team. Engzell touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, swimming a pool record in the latter event. Vessey finished ahead of the pack in the 50 free and the 50 fly, while Flynn was the top performer in the 1650 and 500 free. Alexis McCoy added a first-place performance in the 100 free.
The Aztec divers also took part in the meet, with the red team's Alex Barstad sweeping the 1- and 3-meter events. The black squad received second-place finishes from Caitlin Atkinson (1-meter) and Megan Flanagan (3-meter).
"The results of great training showed up today," said SDSU diving coach Jim Wynne. "Consistency and confidence are clutch and were shown by all the Aztec divers."
San Diego State swimming and diving will kick off the regular season against Mountain West Conference foe Utah on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Aztec Aquaplex. The meet is scheduled for a 3 p.m. PT start.
