SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team held its first intrasquad meet on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex where the black team topped the red squad, 174-161. Jeanette Engzell racked up four first-place finishes, while Elisabeth Krueger claimed top honors in three individual races.
The meet got underway with four heats each of the 50-yard butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Krueger got the red squad off to a good start, finishing ahead of the pack in the 50 free, while placing second in the 50 fly and back. Engzell, meanwhile, kept the black squad out in front early in the competition with a first-place performance in the 50 breast.
Engzell continued to pace the black team, touching the wall first in the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 individual medley. Ashley Flynn (1000 free) and Allison Hall (100 fly) were also top finishers for the black squad.
Over on the red team, Krueger added two more victories in the 200 free and the 200 fly, while Shaida Solimani was a double-winner in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Junior co-captain Kyla Power chipped in with a first-place performance in the 500 free.
Although their scores were not counted in the overall team results, the Aztec divers also competed with three dives on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Senior Megan Flanagan took the top spot in the 3-meter event and junior Caitlin Atkinson claimed the 1-meter. Both Flanagan and Atkinson are two-time NCAA Zone E Diving Regional qualifiers.
The Aztec swimming and diving team will hold its second Red-Black meet on Saturday, Sept. 27, before kicking off the regular season against Mountain West Conference foe Utah on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Aztec Aquaplex. The meet is scheduled for a 3 p.m. PT start.
