BERKELEY, Calif. - The San Diego State track and field team completed first-day action at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational and the Triton Invite on Friday in a week where the Aztecs split their squad. One group traveled north to Berkeley, Calif., for the Hamilton meet, while the other stayed in the county to compete at UC San Diego.
Competing for the first time since April 11 at the Sea Ray Relays, Dana Jensen recorded the second-best performance of the eight-person field, but finished third overall in the pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet, 8 inches. Her personal-record effort marked the second time this season she has qualified for the regional meet and moves her into ninth place on SDSU's all-time outdoor performance list. Christin Shibley and Monica Pacas finished right behind Jensen in a tie for fourth with clearances of 12-1.50.
In the 5,000-meter run, Kristin Glen ran a personal-best 17 minutes, 52.71 seconds, to finish in eighth place in a field of 25. Her previous best came at the Cal-Nevada Championships when she finished the race in 17:53.34.
In the discus, Michele Dannhausen finished in first place in her flight and fifth overall after she threw 149-1 to establish a new personal record. Following Dannhausen's lead was freshman Laura Boggeln who turned in a solid effort with a lifetime-best throw of 113-9 (16th). Also competing in the event were Andrea Martinez, who finished in 11th (137-4), and Tamara McMillan, who tossed 133-11 to come in 12th.
Other top-10 performances by Aztecs came from Kyanna Thomas in the 200-meter dash (4th, 24.91), Joanna Burley in the B Section of the pole vault (t-4th, 11-1.75), Darien Buc in the 800-meter run (6th, 2:20.82) and Shana Watson in the long jump (8th, 18-11.75).
In other SDSU news, freshman pole vaulter Katie Vo established a new personal record with her clearance of 12-2.00 at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. It marked just the second time this season, the first-year Aztec cleared at least 12 feet.
