SAN DIEGO - San Diego State completed a successful first day at the 30th annual Aztec Track and Field Classic on Friday at SDSU Sports Deck. SDSU won both distance events among other events in its only home meet of the 2008 outdoor season.
Darien Buc won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 17.82 seconds, while her teammates took the top five spots in the 1,500. Leading the way in the 1,500 was Michelle Martinez who clocked in with a time of 4:50.43. Following the freshman was Kristin Glen (4:51.22), Stephanie Armstrong (4:53.72), Makenzie Mabry (4:54.50) and Sara Cunningham (4:55.02).
In the 100-meter dash, Decontee Kaye took the open crown with a time of 12:04 and was one of three to finish in the top four of the race. Alicia Lowery came in third place after clocking in with a time of 12.22 and Shana Watson crossed the finish line in 12.37. Later in the 200, Kaye was the runner-up at 24.63, while Lowery placed third (24.84). Watson also competed in the 100-meter hurdles and finished in second after logging a time of 15.19.
The long jump featured a pair of Aztecs at the top of the list as Britney Bennett captured first place with a leap of 17 feet, 11.0 inches. Just behind Bennett was KristaBelle Kiper, who posted an effort of 17-9.50.
Other Aztecs to post solid performances were Michele Dannhausen in the javelin (2nd - 136-00), Katie Vo in the pole vault (2nd - personal-record 12-0.00) and Corri Campbell-Fell in the 400 (3rd - 58.46).
Final-day action at the Aztec Track and Field Classic begins at 11 a.m. PDT at SDSU Sports Deck.
