SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field team officially begins the 2008 indoor season Friday, Jan. 4, at the 18th Annual National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. The two-day event will take place at the Reno Livestock Event Center and will feature Aztec pole vaulters Monica Pacas, Christin Shibley, Dana Jensen, Jordan Cabral and Katie Vo. Last year, senior Dana VanWagner posted SDSU's top vault with a personal-best indoor effort of 12 feet, 3.5 inches, which ranked seventh on San Diego State's all-time performance list. Shibley, meanwhile, turned in the Aztecs' second-best effort with a leap of 11-1.75, while Cabral and Joanna Burley both recorded vaults of 10-6.00.
On day one of the event, an opening ceremony will be held followed by clinics and the elite competition. SDSU's athletes will not begin competition until Saturday, Jan. 5, beginning at approximately 8 a.m.
The National Pole Vault Summit is a developmental clinic established and carried on to promote safety and encourage development of the pole vault at all levels through continued education. This year's summit will focus on speed development, sprint mechanics, developing the approach run among other topics.
The Aztecs will compete for the first time as a team on Saturday, Feb. 2, as they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Mountain T's Invitational.
