SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State divers will head north to Los Angeles, Calif., this weekend for the Trojan Diving Invitational at USC. The two-day event will be held at the McDonald's Swim Center, which was the site of the 1984 Olympic swimming and diving competition.
All six of SDSU's divers will be competing in the one- and three-meter springboard events on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. PT. Four Aztecs will also be participating in the platform event on Saturday, which is scheduled for an 11 a.m. PT start.
"We are honored and excited to be participating in such a great event," said SDSU diving coach Jim Wynne. "We have been training hard and will be competing against some of the top diving programs in the country, so it will be a good early test for us."
In the same event last year, San Diego State fared well with individuals advancing to the finals in both of the springboard events. Junior Kathleen Heuring had a 10th-place finish (213.05) in the one-meter finals, while sophomore Amy Freeberg was the Aztecs' top finisher in the three-meter board (11th in the finals, 210.95). Freeberg and classmate Kristen Maurer also competed in the platform event and finished seventh and 10th, respectively.
The Trojan Diving Invitational will feature individual competition and no team scoring. In the springboard events, each competitor will get six dives and the top-12 will advance to the finals.
While the Aztec divers gear up for their first event of the year, the swimmers' season has been put on hold with the dual meet versus UNLV, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, being postponed. The meet has yet to be rescheduled. San Diego State's next dual meet will be on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Utah.
