MALIBU, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team completed its second day of action at the ITA West Regional Championships on Thursday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.
The Aztecs had four players compete in main draw action with only sophomore Matan Shitrit advancing to the round of 32. Shitrit moved on when his opponent, Scott Hohenstein of UCSB, withdrew due to injury. The Tel Aviv, Israel, native will face the tournament's No. 1 seed in Pepperdine's Andre Begemann Friday at 1 p.m.
A day after recording his second win of the season, sophomore Achim Ceban fell to eighth-seeded Sascha Heinermann of Hawai'i in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshmen Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert both recorded their first defeats of the year. Feliz fell to Arizona State's Juan Carlos Rebaza, 6-2, 6-3, while Schulz van Endert was swept, 6-4, 6-2, by Cal Poly's Darryn Young.
In doubles action, Shitrit and sophomore Juan Gomez were upended in the second round by USC's Daniel Gliner and Jason McNaughton, 8-4.
SDSU's lone win of the day came from Gomez who defeated Cal Poly's Andy Gerst in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, in the consolation bracket of the championships.
Gomez will be joined tomorrow in consolation action by Aztec freshman Matthew Tosches and sophomore Michael Beron. Tosches and Baron both dropped their main draw matches on Wednesday.
