SAN DIEGO - San Diego State track and field senior Sherraine Pencil has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). As a committee member, Pencil will join a group consisting of 31 Division I conference representatives and will speak on behalf of the Mountain West Conference at national SAAC meetings.

The Toronto, Canada, native was selected from a pool of three candidates nominated by the MWC to serve a two-year term, which begins on Sept. 1. During her appointment, Pencil will serve as a student-athlete liaison between the happenings on campus, within the conference and at the national level.

Among her duties as the Mountain West SAAC representative, Pencil will be responsible for gathering feedback and reporting out on behalf of the MWC, as well as relaying important events, hot topics and educational information to both the campus and conference levels. In addition, Pencil and her 30 other peers will speak on the behalf of the entire Division I student-athlete body throughout the NCAA governance structure.

Currently, one national Division I SAAC representative sits on each of the NCAA sub-committees, in order to provide the student-athlete perspective on certain topics. In addition, the Division I SAAC Chair and Vice Chair are currently members of the Division I Management Council, in order to provide feedback and input on legislation, governance concerns, and membership decisions. It is through these two mechanisms that NCAA Division I student-athletes offer input and assist in shaping the proposed legislation and other policies by which their division is governed.

Pencil, the SDSU team captain, enters her senior season having qualified for the NCAA Championships last season in the 200- and 400-meter dash.
