CLAREMONT, Calif. - The San Diego State track and field team wrapped up its regular-season slate by competing at the Claremont Classic at the Burns Track and Field Complex on Saturday. The meet is the Aztecs' last before playing host to the Mountain West Conference Championships at SDSU Sports Deck beginning Wednesday.
For the day, SDSU registered a pair of event titles highlighted by Kai Wheeler's performance in the triple jump and Nicole Stone's effort in the 400-meter hurdles. Wheeler leaped a season-best 37 feet, 6.75 inches to finish ahead of the field, while Stone completed her first 400-hurdle race of 2007 in 62.46.
The San Diego State distance runners enjoyed solid efforts themselves as Darien Buc posted a lifetime-best clocking of 4:49.51 in the 1,500-meter run with three more following suit in the 3,000. Stephanie Armstrong led the 3K group by finishing in second place with a time of 10:52.73. Not far behind was Makenzie Mabry, who crossed the finish line in 11:07.28 (4th place) and Jessica Walker, who came in fifth with a clocking of 11:19.69.
In the discus, Michele Dannhausen set a new personal record by more than four feet by turning in a measurement of 141-9. Prior to Saturday, the sophomore's best effort came at the Cal-Nevada Championships where she tossed 137-6.
In the pole vault, Christin Shibley finished third overall, but first among collegiate competitors after she cleared a season-best 12-1.50. Fellow vaulter Jordan Cabral ended the competition in a tie for ninth with an effort of 11-1.75.
The Aztecs return to the track on Wednesday as they play host to the 2007 MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day meet begins with the decathlon and heptathlon at noon and 12:30 p.m. PDT, respectively.
