WALNUT, Calif. - The San Diego State track and field team wrapped up a busy Saturday as it competed in both the Mt. SAC Relays and the Vs Athletics Invitational. For the day, the Aztecs registered a pair of NCAA regional qualifying performances and set six individual season bests.
In Walnut, Calif., on a brief fourth day of the Mt. SAC Relays, Decontee Kaye placed eighth in the long jump with a season-best effort of 18 feet, 4.50 inches.
At the Vs Athletics Invitational, formerly known as the Long Beach Invite, Aztec pole vaulters Dana Van Wagner and Monica Pacas turned in NCAA regional qualifying efforts. Van Wagner, who had qualified for regionals four times already, did it a fifth time after clearing 12-5.50 for a third consecutive week. Pacas, meanwhile, tied Van Wagner for second place after vaulting a identical height and qualified for the West Region meet for a third time.
In the sprinting events, Amber Waddell enjoyed her best day as an Aztec after establishing a pair of SDSU personal bests. The freshman completed the 100-meter dash in 12.60 to finish 11th and then followed it with a sixth-place effort of 25.81. Classmates Makenzie Mabry and Darien Buc later followed Waddell's lead as they both set season-best times in the 5,000-meter run. Mabry crossed the finish line in 19:42.38, while Buc (19:53.00) finished the race over 18 seconds faster than she did at the Aztec Invite back on March 17.
Other SDSU athletes to post season-best marks include Raquel Butler, who leaped 15-6.25 in the long jump, and Robyn Guzman, who recorded a discus throw of 116-8.
San Diego State continues action at the Mt. SAC Relays on Sunday, April 15. The Aztecs will be very busy as they are scheduled to compete in 12 events beginning with the shot put at 9:45 a.m. PDT.
