Aztecs Head To Oregon For Spring Break Tourney
The San Diego State women's golf team begins its spring break by traveling to Oregon for the 2007 Oregon Duck Invitational in Junction City, Ore. The 54-hole tournament will take place over two days, March 26-27, at the par-72, 6,096 Shadow Hills Country Club, about 15 miles north of Eugene, Ore.
This is the third straight season that the Aztecs will head to the University of Oregon event, taking eighth last season after placing 14th in 2005.
This year, SDSU faces competition from 13 other schools, including one fellow Mountain West Conference member in Wyoming. The highest ranked opponent is No. 38 USF, followed by No. 43 Washington State.
Each day will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The field will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Fab Five: Aztec Line-Up For This Week
For the fourth event in a row, SDSU head coach Felicia Brown will take the starting five of senior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), junior Kim Carmody (Palatine, Ill.) and sophomores Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.), Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) and Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) to Las Vegas.
Both Oliver and Kamimura participated in last year's tournament at Oregon. Kamimura came in 30th place, while Oliver finished not far behind in 39th.
Rewind: Oregon Duck Invitational 2006
The San Diego State women's golf team finished in eighth place with a final score of 947 (+83) at the 16-team 2006 Oregon Duck Invitational. The Aztecs ended 29 strokes behind tournament champion San Jose State, at the par-72, 6,191-yard Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, Ore. The Spartans edged out Oregon State by one stroke.
SDSU had one player place in the top 15 and two golfers in the top 20 of the 85-person field. Sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) ended the tournament in a tie for 14th, as she fired a 16-over 232. Senior Megan Mulhaupt didn't finish far behind, carding an 18-over 234, good for a 17th place tie. Booth and Mulhaupt both shot final round scores of 80.
Aztec freshman Maki Kamimura tied for 30th with a 22-over 238. Kamimura also led the field in par three scoring, shooting a combined two under par for the tournament (2.83 avg). Junior Jamie Oliver, after carding scores in the mid-80's in the first two rounds, came back in the third round and fired a 75, pushing herself to a 39th place finish. Freshman Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) also competed for SDSU's starting five and ended the tournament in 70th.
USF's Jessica Potter and Washington State's Anastasia Kostina each took home a share of the individual crown with a 5-over 221 score.
Last Time Out: Aztecs Take 18th In Vegas
Playing in a field of nine schools ranked in the top 60 nationally, the San Diego State women's golf team ended its first 54-hole tournament of the spring season in 18th place Wednesday at 50-over 914 at the UNLV Spring Invitational in Boulder City, Nev.
The Aztecs logged their second-best 18 holes of the event at 18-over 306, but dropped to 18th place after seven teams logged even-par rounds or better at the par-72, 6,199-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club.
BYU won the event by 10 strokes over conference-rival New Mexico, posting a 15-under 847 for the tournament. Idaho's Kelly Nakashima and Fresno State's Jennifer Shipley tied for medalist honors at 11-under 205, overtaking BYU's Rachel Newren who led after each of the first two days.
SDSU sophomore Maki Kamimura fired a 3-over 75 in the final round to put her in a tie for 44th overall at 8-over 224. Kamimura's 54-hole score is a season-best and tied her career best which she tallied a year ago at the same event in Boulder City.
The biggest improvement on the day came via Aztec junior Kim Carmody, who notched a career-best 76, six strokes better than her second round effort. Carmody had birdies on a pair of par-5 holes, the No. 13 and No. 1, and ended the tournament at 21-over 237.
Senior Jamie Oliver tied for 60th at 12-over 228, including a 77 in the final 18. Sophomore Jackie Kazarian ended up tied for 72nd with a 231, while fellow sophomore Alana Erlandson, who was disqualified for an error on her scorecard Tuesday, logged a final round 81.
Looking Back At The Fall Season
The San Diego State women's golf squad played in four team tournaments this past fall, logging top-13 finishes in every event. The Aztecs top performance came at their lone home tournament of the season, the Taylor Made Aztec Fall Classic, where the team took ninth place in the 19-team field.
Individually, the Aztecs swept the top two spots at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Shootout in Flagstaff, Ariz., Sept. 18-19. Anna Booth claimed medalist honors with a 2-over 148, just one stroke better than teammate Maki Kamimura, who carded a 3-over 149.
Four SDSU players ended their fall campaign with a sub-78.00 stroke average, including Alana Erlandson, who posted a team-best 76.88 average in eight rounds.
