OKLAHOMA CITY - The San Diego State women's swimming and diving team finds itself in ninth place after the first day ofthe 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships. The Aztecs scored a total of 36 points in two of the three events held on Wednesday to finish eight points behind Air Force, which is eighth with 44 points. Brigham Young scored 120 points to sit atop the team standings.
SDSU scored points in a pair of relay events: the 200 medley and 800 freestyle. Both quartets finished their race with the team's season-best time of the 2006-07 season.
In the 200 medley event, the foursome of Katie Smith, Christine Graham, Ana Dowell and Kendal Twilling finsihed in a time of 1:49.98, one second better than SDSU's season best. In the 800 free relay it was Emily Parker, Twilling, Brittany Daly and Kimberlee Frith that recorded a mark of 7:44.32, an improvement of some eight seconds over the team's fastest time this season.
The third event held on Wednesday was the women's 3-meter diving. San Diego State divers Kathleen Heuring (214.60), Caitlin Atkinson (210.40), Megan Flanagan (1208.35) and Amy Freeberg (206.70) finished 20th through 23rd resepctively in the preliminaires and did not qualify for the finals.
Action resumes Thursday morning with the 1-meter diving at 10:00 a.m. followed by the beginning of indivudual event competition.
