Irvine, Calif. - The SDSU swimming and diving team completed day two at the UCI/Ayres Invitational in Irvine by finishing second of 10 teams in the relay meet competition. In addition, five Aztec divers captured top-10 finishes in the 1-meter event and took three of the top six places in the 3-meter.
San Diego State totaled 266 points to finish behind a Wyoming team that finished with a score of 340. USD finished third (217) followed by Pepperdine (215) , San Jose State (205) , UC Irvine (160), Alaska-Fairbanks (61), Whitman (44), Boise State (23) and Cal State-East Bay (13).
The Aztecs' top relay finish came in the 3x100 breaststroke where they finished second. They went on to finish sixth or higher in seven of the remaining nine relay including fifth in the 4x200 freestyle, 3x100 IM and the 800 (100, 200, 500) freestyle.
In the diving events, which were not scored, SDSU freshman Caitlin Atkinson took second (of 19 divers) in the 1-meter with a score of 225.55. In addition, the four other Aztec divers had top 10 results as well. Kathleen Heuring was fourth (207.80) followed by Megan Flanagan (5th - 205.15), Amy Freeberg (7th - 199.0) and Kristen Maurer (10th - 192.95).
In the 3-meter diving, Flanagan captured fourth place (18 divers), scoring 232.45 points. Other SDSU finishers included Freeberg (5th - 228.35) and Atkinson (6th - 224.10).
San Diego State will now have a week off from competition before facing Howard University in its final home meet of the season on Friday, January 16, at the Kroc Community Center at 1:00 p.m.
