IRVINE, Calif. - Daly leads Aztecs to fourth-place team finish in distance meet The San Diego State swimming team completed day one at the UCI/Ayres Invitational by finishing eighth of 12 teams in the sprint portion of the event and fourth of nine teams in the distance meet. The Aztecs accumulated 91 points in the spring meet to finish behind the winning Washington squad that scored 475. The Huskies also win the distance meet with 141 points as SDSU totaled 86.
Over the course of the two meets, senior Kimberlee Frith held SDSU by capturing four top 10 finishes in her events. Included in her results were fifth in the 500 free (5:12.80) and 400 individual medley (4:39.53) plus seventh in the 50 butterfly (27.44) and 10th in the 100 butterfly (1:00.80).
Brittany Daly recorded a total of three top 10 finishes during the meet, including SDSU's only first-place of the day. Daly's best effort came in the 1000 freestyle, an event she won with a mark of 10:46.52. She came back later in the meet to capture fourth in the 1650 freestyle in 18:07.40. In the earlier sprint events, the junior from Bay Shore, N.Y., was ninth of 32 swimmers with a time of 2:15.69
In addition, sophomore Katie Smith took fifth place in the 100 backstroke (1:02.20) and added a seventh-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:14.95).
San Diego State had two other athletes record top 10 finishes in their respective events as Emily Parker was ninth in the 500 freestyle in 5:18.13 while Rosalie Raymond was 10th in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:08.46.
San Diego State will continue action in Irvine on Sunday (Jan. 7) as they compete in the relay and diving meets that make up the third and fourth parts of the UCI/Ayres Invitational.
