SAN DIEGO - In its final home dual meet until mid-January, the San Diego State Aztec swimming and diving team fell to the University of Wyoming, 133.5-73.5, at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center Tuesday afternoon. The Aztecs, who had 15 season-best times established by individual swimmers during the meet, saw their record drop to 5-7 on the season as they enter a three-week break in their 2006-07 campaign.
Junior Katie Smith was SDSU's top performer on the day, securing first-place finishes in both the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. Her 2:10.29 in the IM was a new career top time for the third-year swimmer from Los Angeles, while her 2:06.37 in the backstroke event was her 2006 best mark in that event by over two seconds. Smith also swam the opening leg of the Aztecs' 400 IM relay squad that finished second with a time of 4:01.78.
Kimberlee Frith picked up first and second-place finishes in a pair of freestyle events. The senior went 53.75 in the 100 free, tying Wyoming's Tamara Lehnertz for first place. Earlier in the day, Frith swam a 1:55.51 in the 200 freestyle. Both of her marks in those events are bests by an SDSU swimmer this fall. In addition, she was the anchor leg of SDSU's 400 IM relay quartet.
In the 50 free, junior Ana Dowell, a transfer from New Hampshire took second with her season-best time of 25.09. She was also runner-up in the 200 butterfly in 2:11.35, another personal best. Both of Dowell's marks on the day rank as the top times on the team this season.
Elsewhere, San Diego State received second-place finishes from Emily Parker in the 500 free (5:08.77) and Jessica Morrill in the 200 IM (2:10.87). Once again both of those marks are the season-best times for the respective swimmers.
The Aztecs now have a break until Dec. 16 when they will visit Las Vegas for a dual meet against MWC foe UNLV. They will remain in Las Vegas the following two days to compete in the annual UNLV Winter Invitational.
