DENTON, Texas - The San Diego State swimming and diving team came up on the short end of a 181-116 decision at North Texas Friday evening. The loss dropped the Aztecs to 4-5 in dual meet competition the season while the Mean Green, which also defeated Centenary Friday, improved to 3-1. SDSU did not compete against Centenary, but will face the Ladies tomorrow as part of a double dual meet at TCU.
SDSU was dominant in the diving, sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter events. In the one-meter, freshman Caitlin Atkinson took first place with a mark of 264.08 as she set a new school record in the process. Sophomore Megan Flanagan was right behind her with a score of 256.13 while another frosh, Kristen Maurer, took third with a personal best 253.58 points. San Diego State's two other divers, Amy Freeberg and Kathleen Heuring also set personal season bests with 250.80 and 249.00 respectively.
In the three-meter diving, it was Flanagan taking top honors as she set a new Aztec record with 265.20 points. Heuring (258.75), Freeberg (256.50) and Maurer (234.75) all set career bests while Atkinson finished fourth at 239.33.
San Diego State had two other first-place finishes in its dual with the Mean Green. In the 1,000 freestyle, junior Brittany Daly, a transfer from the University of New Hampshire, went 10:36.55. Senior Kimberlee Frith took top honors in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 54.12.
Frith was also second in the 50 free (25.49) and 200 free (1:58.07) as was teammate Katie Smith in the 100 and 200 backstroke (1:01.15 and 2:11.27 respectively). In addition, freshman Jessica Morrill turned in a pair of runner-up finishes, coming in second in both the 100 (1:08.29) and 200 breaststroke (2:25.45).
The Aztecs will now travel to Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday (Nov. 18) where they will face both Centenary and TCU in a double dual meet with the contest against the Horned Frogs being a Mountain West Conference match-up. The meet gets underway at noon (CST).
