SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis squad was in action today at the USD Torero Challenge with singles and doubles matches versus the University of Portland. SDSU took four of the six singles matches while the Pilots took two of the three doubles matches.

Filip Zivkovic and Colby Jager defeated sophomore Billy Timu (Laval, Quebec) and senior Anthony Gomez (Palm Desert, Calif.), 8-6, while Scott Kennel and Alex Strom defeated senior Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) and redshirt freshman Michael Beron (San Diego, Calif.) by the same score. Freshman Achim Ceban and junior Robert Sabo (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) were the only Aztec tandem to emerge victorious as they defeated Charlie Yemm and Joel Kincaid, 8-4.

Groh, who was coming off an appearance in the singles semifinals at the Wilson/ITA West Regionals last weekend, won his singles match, 7-5, 6-1, over Colby Jager. Ceban, Timu and Sabo were also victorious in their respective singles matches.

Play continues tomorrow at the USD West Tennis Courts with the Aztecs and the Anteaters of UC Irvine set to compete at 1 p.m. PT.
