CLAREMONT, Calif. - In its final tune-up before the Mountain West Conference meet, the San Diego State track and field squad sent a handful of athletes to compete in the Claremont Classic on Saturday at Burns Track and Field Complex on the campus of Claremont McKenna College. The Aztecs were led by seniors Erin Asay and Jamillah Titus, who recorded runner-up finishes in the pole vault and high jump, respectively.
Asay recorded an NCAA regional qualifying mark for the seventh time in her last eight outings with a clearance of 12-5.50, tying her for second place with unattached vaulter Brittani Bernhard. Junior Dana Van Wagner followed in fourth with a height of 11-11.75, while sophomore Christin Shibley equaled her season best with a vault of 11-5.75 to finish in a seventh-place tie.
Meanwhile, Titus posted a leap of 5-4.50 in her event to tie Shannon Toliver of UC Riverside, but had to settle for second based on the number of attempts at that mark.
Other highlights for SDSU on Saturday included season-best performances from sophomore Anne Vieira in the 3,000 (second - 11:38.23) and freshman Michele Dannhausen in the javelin (sixth - 122-10).
The Aztecs head to Provo, Utah, next week to compete in the MWC Outdoor Championships, scheduled for May 10-13, at Clarence F. Robison Track on the campus of Brigham Young University.
