PROVO, Utah - Select members of the San Diego State track and field team competed during the first day of action Friday at the NCAA West Regional Championships at Clarence F. Robison Track on the campus of Brigham Young University. Leading the way for the Aztecs was freshman Nicole Stone (Ontario, Calif.) and senior Larnie Boyd (Vallejo, Calif.), who both qualified for Saturday's finals in the 400-meter dash.

Stone posted a runner-up finish in the second heat with the fourth-fastest time of the day (54.03), while Boyd took third in the first heat and placed seventh overall with a 55.14 clocking. Freshman Corri Campbell-Fell (Vancouver, Canada) was unable to advance in her event, however, finishing 12th overall in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.28).

Freshman Shana Watson, competing in her first of two events on the weekend, placed ninth in the long jump finals with a personal-best leap of 20-1.00. With her effort, the Oakland, Calif., native moved into third place on SDSU's all-time performance list.

Rounding out the Aztecs' contingent on the afternoon was freshman Leanne Taylor (Porterville, Calif.), who finished 18th in the shot put finals with a toss of 44-5.25.

The NCAA regional meet concludes for SDSU on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. MDT with the pole vault. Senior Erin Asay (San Diego, Calif.) will be looking to secure a spot in next month's national championships, scheduled for June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif. The top-five finishers in each individual event and the top three relays will earn automatic bids to the NCAA meet. Asay entered the weekend ranked seventh in the nation and third in the West Region in the pole vault.
