PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State track and field squad finds itself in fourth place after the third day of competition at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Clarence F. Robison Track on the campus of Brigham Young University. The Aztecs tallied 31 team points through seven scored events on Friday, trailing Colorado State (92.5 pts.), BYU (71 pts.) and Utah (38 pts.).

SDSU posted a pair of third-place finishes on the day, highlighted by freshman Shana Watson's leap of 19-7.50 in the long jump. With her effort, the Oakland, Calif., product set a season best and improved on her NCAA regional qualifying mark. Watson was helped in the event by fellow classmates Decontee Kaye (Hayward, Calif.) and Kristin Olafsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland), who placed fifth (18-10.25) and sixth (18-2.25), respectively.

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, junior Lisa Crampton (11:03.10) also turned in a third-place performance as the Livermore, Calif., native overcame a sizeable deficit in the final 50 meters to edge BYU's Amy Fowler (11:03.27) at the finish line. Freshman Leanne Taylor (Porterville, Calif.) scored points as well for SDSU with a fifth-place toss of 155-3 in the discus.

The Aztecs also put on a strong display in the running preliminaries as SDSU had 12 entrants qualify for Saturday's finals in six different events. Leading the way was freshman Nicole Stone (Ontario, Calif.), who qualified for her second NCAA regional event of the season with a lifetime-best clocking of 53.61 in the 400, which now ranks sixth on the Aztecs' all-time performance list. Sophomore Sherraine Pencil (Toronto, Canada) was impressive as well, recording personal bests in both the 100 (11.96) and 200 (23.98).

A day after her runner-up finish in the heptathlon, Kristin Olafsdottir also logged a lifetime best in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.94.

The 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships conclude on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. MDT for the field events and 11:30 a.m. MDT for the track events.
