TEMPE, Ariz. - A first place tournament finish slipped through the hands of the No. 22 ranked San Diego State men's golf team on the final day of play, as they tied for third at the ASU Thunderbird Classic on the par-72, 7,037 yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The team carded an 835 (-29), just five strokes above tournament champion, University of Arizona.
Sophomore Aaron Goldberg led the Aztecs with a 207 (-9) final, and a fifth place finish. Fellow classmate, David Palm followed right behind Goldberg to finish in a tie for sixth, with a 208 (-8) final score. The seniors, Andrew Scott and Josh Warthen, both tied for 19th after ending the event with a 4-under, 212. Rounding out the team, sophomore Cory Segall moved up on the leaderboard from 30th to 28th, after shooting a 71 on the third round to end at 2-under par.
Arizona pulled ahead of the Aztecs, as four out-of-their five golfers shot in the 60s, landing them the first place spot with a final 830 (-34). Kansas State's Ben Kern shot an overall 69-65-65--199 (-17), setting the tournament record and taking home the medalist honors.
The Aztecs will conclude their 2005-06 regular season on April 15-16, when they travel up to Palo Alto, Calif. to take part in their third Pac-10 tournament - the U.S. Intercollegiate - hosted by Stanford University.
