IRVINE, Calif. - For the second consecutive season, 10th-ranked and ninth-seeded San Diego State finished higher than their tournament seed and placed seventh at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship with its 5-4 victory over No. 6 seed UC Irvine at Anteater Aquatics Complex Sunday morning. The win improves SDSU's overall record to 22-12.
San Diego State opened the game with a 1-0 lead after one period and scored once in the second to account for its first-half scoring. UC Irvine, after being held without a goal in the opening seven minutes, recorded a pair in the second to knot the score at two.
The Anteaters took a brief one-goal lead after holding the Aztecs off the scoreboard in the third quarter. But as the fourth period came around, SDSU's offense took off, notching three goals, while only allowing one, to close out the game.
Stacy Werner posted a team-high two goals for San Diego State, with Elana Cervantes, Anna Gonzales and Ashling Taylor each chipping in with one apiece. Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore added 10 saves in a winning effort.
In addition to finishing better than their championship seed for the second year in a row, the Aztecs' effort is their second straight seventh-place showing after being the No. 10 seed in 2005.
