SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Kristin Olafsdottir posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon on Friday during the second day of competition at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz. Despite nursing a sore foot, Olafsdottir finished in fourth place with a personal-best total of 5,086 points, which ranks 10th on the Aztecs' all-time list.
"For Kristin to finish fourth in her condition, really says a lot," SDSU assistant coach Jennifer Nanista said. "Overall, she gave a very solid performance in her first collegiate heptathlon."
Olafsdottir's score was bolstered by a first-place effort in the 800 meters as the Reykjavik, Iceland, native crossed the tape with lifetime-best clocking of 2:13.86. She also notched a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.53) on Thursday.
Meanwhile, junior Kristin Karhio (Pacific Grove, Calif.) also competed in the heptathlon for the Aztecs on Friday, finishing in 13th place with 4,190 points. Arizona State's Jacquelyn Johnson won the event with 5,797 points, followed by Sara Jane Baker of Nebraska (5,485 pts.).
Olafsdottir and Karhio rejoin the rest of the SDSU track and field squad on Saturday for the final day of the Jim Click Shootout. The Aztecs will have 23 athletes competing at the meet, which commences with the women's hammer throw at 11 a.m. MST.
