ANN ARBOR, Mich. - San Diego State finished the 2006 Wolverine Invitational as the only undefeated team in the field as it recorded wins over 15th-ranked Michigan, 13-0, and Michigan State, 13-6, on the final day of the tournament at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor on Sunday. The Aztecs improve to 12-5 overall.
In SDSU's first match of the day against Michigan, the Aztecs scored two goals in the first period and never looked back. The pair of goals in the first stanza would be all the scoring San Diego State would need as its defense completely shut down the Wolverine offensive attack.
The shutout is the first time SDSU has held an opponent scoreless since March 2, 2002, when it defeated Redlands, 5-0.
The Aztecs had eight different players score beginning with Rachel Serna's four, two from Jenna Schuster and Stacy Werner, and one goal apiece from Elana Cervantes, Erinn Greenwood, Ashling Taylor, Becca Ur and Cassie Zebisch.
The final match of the tournament versus Michigan State was by far the most competitive for San Diego State as it found itself tied at halftime, 5-5. But like it has all season, SDSU put forth a strong defensive effort in the second half allowing only one goal in the third quarter and none in the fourth en route to its 13th win of the year.
The Aztecs were led by Susan Stiver's hat trick and two goals by Ur with Greenwood, Savanah Kelley, Erin Lester, Ashley McCullum, Schuster, Serna, Taylor and Werner each contributing one goal apiece.
Next up for San Diego State will be the Loyola Marymount Invitational in Los Angeles. The two-day tournament is slated for March 24-25.
