LOS ANGELES - The seventh-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team ran into a buzz saw on Sunday, falling to No. 3 UCLA, 12-3, in a clash between two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center in Los Angeles. With the defeat, the Aztecs fall to 9-5 (3-2 MPSF) on the year, while the Bruins improve 16-2 (7-0).
Ten different players scored for UCLA on the afternoon as the Bruins built an 8-0 cushion in the third quarter before SDSU finally dented the scoreboard on a goal by senior Savanah Kelley (Modesto, Calif.) with 4:21 left in the period.
UCLA, however, extended its lead to 12-1 as Brittany Rowe and Katie Rulon both tallied their second goals of the day for the host school. Junior Ashley McCullum (Poway, Calif.) got SDSU back on the board with a score at 3:21 in the final stanza, while junior Stacy Werner (Lodi, Calif.) extended her consecutive-match scoring streak to six with a late goal, providing the contest with the final count of 12-3.
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore (Rossmoor, Calif.) had five saves for the scarlet and black, while the Bruins' Emily Feher made six stops before giving way to Brittany Fullen, who chipped in with one save.
The Aztecs will step out of conference next weekend when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the Michigan Invitational. The Aztecs will face Cal Baptist and Indiana on Friday, March 18, before locking horns with Michigan and Michigan State on Saturday, March 19.
