FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - San Diego State senior Erin Asay (San Diego, Calif.) finished seventh in the pole vault out of an elite field of 17 athletes on Saturday at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Asay cleared 13-5.25 in the event, which was held at the University of Arkansas' Randal Jordan Indoor Track Complex. With her performance, Asay received All-America accolades, the first time ever for an Aztec athlete in indoor track and field.

"Erin did a fantastic job of representing San Diego State on the national stage," said SDSU assistant coach Richard Fox. "It's really a battle out there at this level and for Erin to place and receive All-America honors says a lot."

Chelsea Johnson of UCLA and Lacy Janson of Florida State led the field as both vaulted 14-9.00, but Johnson claimed the individual title based on fewer missed attempts.

Asay also found herself in a logjam after leaping 13-5.25 along with four other competitors. However, the order of finish was determined by the number of misses by each athlete at previous heights. Still, Asay's seventh-place effort scored two team points for SDSU, which finished tied for 51st out of 63 teams overall. Texas captured the team championship with 51 points, followed by runner-up Stanford with 36 points.

Asay will rejoin the rest of the San Diego State track and field squad next weekend when it plays host to its lone outdoor meet of the year, the 28th Annual Aztec Track Classic, at the SDSU Sports Deck. The two-day competition gets underway Friday, March 17, at 9 a.m.
