SAN DIEGO - The 40th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team notched its fifth-straight victory Thursday with a hard-fought 5-2 conquest of No. 38 North Carolina State at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU (8-4) took five of six singles matches against the Wolfpack (10-3), propelling the Aztecs to their longest winning streak in three years. In March 2003, the scarlet and black reeled off eight straight triumphs en route to a 22-6 record.
The No. 1 doubles team of Dita Hauerlandova and Sisse Nielsen got things going for SDSU early on when they upset the 30th-ranked Wolfpack tandem of Barbara Orlay and Alejandra Guerra in convincing fashion, 8-2. The momentum was short-lived, though, as NC State battled back to claim the doubles point with consecutive 8-3 wins at Nos. 2-3.
Unfazed, the Aztecs went back to work in singles play, taking a 2-1 lead with a pair of straight straight-set victories. At the No. 1 position, Hauerlandova upended Orlay, 6-3, 6-2, while Milana Yusupov outlasted Julia Roach, 7-5, 7-6, at the No. 4 spot. The Wolfpack responded as Nandita Chandrasekar defeated SDSU's Esther Cadua in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to knot the score at 2-2.
The Aztecs, however, would not be denied as they took the next two matches to secure the victory. Eliska Krausova extended her winning streak to six matches, disposing of NC State's Guerra in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, while Alesya Vidov fought back from an early deficit to defeat Shona Lee, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, giving the scarlet and black its eighth triumph of the year. Nielsen provided the final margin of the day, dispatching Niels Barringer, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
SDSU concludes its three-match homestand with a Monday showdown against Wisconsin on March 13, at Aztec Tennis Center. The contest is slated for a noon PST start. The Aztecs will then have 11 days off before opening Mountain West Conference play on Friday, March 24, when they face Utah in Las Vegas, Nev.
