ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State freshman Kristin Olafsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) took third place in the pentathlon on Thursday during the first day of competition at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Olafsdottir recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3,843 points, just 37 points behind runner-up Amanda Feigt of Utah (3,880 pts.) and 55 behind the winner, Katie Lloyd of Colorado State (3,898 pts.).

Olafsdottir's performance ranks third in school history and included first-place finishes in both the 60-meter hurdles (8.68) and 800-meter run (2:16.67). She also placed second in the high jump (5-5), fifth in the long jump (18-3.25) and ninth in the shot put (30-4.75). With her effort, Olafsdottir also established a new standard of excellence in her native Iceland, surpassing that country's national record of 3,607 points set by Vala Flosadottir in 2003.

Freshman Corri Campbell-Fell (Vancouver, Canada) and junior Kristin Karhio (Pacific Grove, Calif.) also competed for the Aztecs, finishing ninth (3,198 pts.) and 10th (3,094 pts.), respectively.

The 2006 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships resume Friday beginning at 1 p.m. MST. Friday's finals include the weight throw, pole vault, long jump and 5000-meter run.
