LA JOLLA, Calif. - Eighth-ranked San Diego State (3-1) completed its first weekend of competition with a third place showing at the UCSD Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center Sunday afternoon after defeating No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, 6-5.
Becca Ur opened the game with a first-quarter goal to give the Aztecs an early lead with 1:30 remaining. However, not a minute later, the Gauchos tied the score thanks to a goal by Amanda Tipton.
Later in the second quarter, Serna scored to give SDSU the lead, but a pair of UCSB goals gave the Gauchos a 3-2 lead going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, UC Santa Barbara was issued with an ejection and junior Stacy Werner took full advantage of the situation scoring her third goal of the season while tying the ballgame at 3-3. As the quarter wound down, the Gauchos found a way to score with 15 seconds left to take a 4-3 lead going into the contest's final seven minutes.
As it did on Saturday, SDSU turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter limiting UCSB to just one goal after the Aztecs tied the score a four apiece on a Serna goal.
Down just one score with just over five and half minutes left, Elana Cervantes found the back of the net with 1:34 on the clock and Anna Gonzales provided the winning goal 29 seconds later to give the game its final margin.
Earlier in the day, SDSU dropped a 7-6 decision to ninth-ranked Long Beach State. The Aztecs held the lead after three quarters, but could not muster any offense in the final period eventually falling to the 49ers. For the game, the Aztecs received goals from Werner (2), Gonzales, Savanah Kelley, Serna and Susan Stivers.
SDSU's next game is set for Thursday, Feb. 23, against the University of Hawaii at The Salvation Army Kroc Center. Game time for the home opener is scheduled for 3 p.m.
