SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field team continued its indoor campaign on Saturday as senior Erin Asay (San Diego, Calif.) set a school record in the pole vault at the Albuquerque Invitational held at the ABQ Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. Asay won the event with a leap of 14 feet, 0.50 inches, which broke Shayla Balentine's year-old record of 14-0 set at the 2005 Mountain West Conference indoor championships.
Asay's mark also established a new MWC indoor record and automatically qualified her for next month's NCAA indoor championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Asay was victorious in the pole vault for the second straight week after capturing first place at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 4.
SDSU also received impressive performances from a pair of freshmen, Decontee Kaye (Hayward, Calif.) and Kristin Olafsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland). Kaye placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 42-1.50, setting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the second week in a row.
Olafsdottir, meanwhile, logged two top-10 finishes on the day, including a third-place effort in the 60-meter hurdles (8.66) and an eighth-place performance in the high jump (5-4.25). Olafsdottir also teamed with senior Larnie Boyd (Vallejo, Calif.), freshman Nicole Stone (Ontario, Calif.) and sophomore Mandy Upuu (Courtenay, Canada) on the Aztecs' 4x400 relay team which came in third with a time of 3:47.39.
Other notable performances on the day included junior Lisa Crampton (Livermore, Calif.) who placed third in the 3,000 meters with a clocking of 10:20.41, a 37-second improvement over her showing from the previous week. Fellow classmate Lisa Naucler (Ljusdal, Sweden) also registered a third-place effort in the 800 with a time of 2:19.79 in her first meet of the year.
SDSU will have two weeks off to prepare for the 2006 Mountain West Conference indoor championships, which will also be held at the ABQ Convention Center in Albuquerque Feb. 23-25.
