SAN DIEGO - Aztec women's basketball head coach Beth Burns has signed a five-year contract, San Diego State Director of Athletics Jeff Schemmel announced Tuesday.

"We're delighted to have a coach of Beth's caliber and history of winning at San Diego State," Schemmel said. "Her passion for the game and leadership skills will no doubt return this program to national prominence."

This is Burns' second stint as head coach of the Aztecs. From 1989 to 1997, she led SDSU to four NCAA tournament bids and was a three-time Western Athletic Conference coach of the year. She compiled a 151-83 overall record and a program-best 64.5 winning percentage.

"From the beginning I have been committed to San Diego State University and our women's basketball program," Burns said. "It's great to have Jeff (Schemmel) on board and I look forward to great things in the future in our program and beyond."

Burns returned to Montezuma Mesa on April 8, taking over the program for Jim Tomey, who resigned after three years as head coach.
