San Diego State Travels To The Bay Area For An Intrastate Matchup With California
After 40 years of not playing each other in a regular season contest, San Diego State and Point Loma Nazarene renew their rivalry this Saturday night at Cox Arena.

For the second time in two seasons, San Diego State will take on Pacific-10 Conference member California Tuesday night. After playing in San Diego last year, this meeting will take place at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. PST and the contest can be heard on The Mighty 1090 (XPRS-1090 AM) with Ted Leitner calling play-by-play. There is no television coverage for this game.

The all-time series between the two schools is knotted at two apiece with the Golden Bears winning the first meeting in 1940 and the most recent get-together last season at the inaugural San Diego SLAM. The Aztecs on the other hand, were victorious during the middle pair of games in 1941 and 1942.

The trip to Berkeley will be the first for SDSU since the the 1940-41 season. That season the Aztecs claimed their first win in the series defeating California, 29-28 (Jan. 4, 1941).

San Diego State is 4-2 this season and is coming off an 88-77 non-conference victory over Point Loma Nazarene Saturday night at Cox Arena. The game saw the Aztecs shoot 92.3 percent (24-26) from the free-throw line, outrebound the Sea Lions 47-31 and outscore Point Loma Nazarene in the paint, 42-20. Individually, three Aztecs scored in double figures led by junior Marcus Slaughter's game-high 25 points (9-9 FTs). The MWC preseason player of the year also grabbed 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and the 15th of his career. Classmate Brandon Heath added 20 points for his fourth 20-plus point game of the season. Freshman forward and Northern California native Kyle Spain was 6-of-9 from the field for a career high 15 points. He also contributed nine rebounds and is averaging 6.5 on the season.

Despite giving up 77 points, 30 coming off three-point field goals, the Aztecs held Point Loma Nazarene center Tim Kruge in check. Kruge averaged 15.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds coming into the contest, but was limited to just two points (1-7 FGs) and three rebounds in 17 minutes of action.

The Golden Bears (5-1) are also coming off a Saturday night win, defeating Akron, 89-75, at Haas Pavilion. The victory was California's fifth in a row, all coming at home. The game was the second for forward Leon Powe. In his first game back against San Jose State, Powe went for 27 points and 10 rebounds. Saturday night versus the Zips, Powe nearly equaled his season debut numbers, putting up 26 points and grabbing another 10 rebounds. Powe is just one of four Golden Bears averaging double figures. Spain's high school teammate at Newark Memorial High School, DeVon Hardin, is averaging 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds, while Ayinde Ubaka and Richard Midgley are scoring an average of 14.5 and 13.4 points, respectively.

The game against California is the first of two consecutive against Pac-10 schools for the Aztecs. On Dec. 10, SDSU hosts Washington State at the second annual San Diego SLAM at Cox Arena.
