SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team notched four victories in singles competition and also took two doubles matches on Sunday at the 2005 USD Torero Challenge played on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Aztecs faced Washington at USD's West Courts on the second day of a four-team tournament, which highlighted individual results with no team scoring.

In the number one singles position, Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) defeated the Huskies' Andy Kuharszky in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Four of the five remaining matches, however, required three sets to determine the victors.

Markus Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) fell behind early in his contest against UW's Daniel Chu, 4-6, before prevailing in the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Junior transfer Anthony Gomez (Palm Desert, Calif.) also rallied from an early deficit to dispatch Andrew Gerst, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Eugenio Romero (Ensenada, Mexico) emerged victorious against David Chu, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.

In doubles action, meanwhile, SDSU was triumphant in two of its three matches. Groh teamed with Robert Sabo to defeat the top Husky duo of Kuharszky and Klaus Jank, 8-4, while Gomez and Stephan Timu upended David and Daniel Chu, 8-3.

The Aztecs will face USD to close off the tournament on Monday, with the action getting underway at 1 p.m. at the Toreros' West Courts.
