SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team got two singles victories to go along with a pair of wins in doubles competition Saturday, as the Aztecs completed day one of the 2005 USD Torero Challenge on the campus of the University of San Diego. SDSU faced the University of Southern California in the round-robin competition, while USD matched up against the University of Washington.
Sophomore Robert Sabo (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) continued his early-season success, knocking off the Trojans' Chong Wang, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) dispatched Garrett Snyder after a close opening set, 7-5, 6-0. Teammate Markus Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) experienced a much tougher time with Kaes Van't Hof, however, dropping a three-set decision, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. The rest of the Aztec contingent also found difficulty in singles play, as Eugenio Romero (Ensenada, Mexico), Stephan Timu (Montreal, Quebec) and Anthony Gomez (Palm Desert, Calif.) each suffered defeats in their respective matches.
In doubles play, meanwhile, SDSU got victories from the tandems of Groh and Timu, along with Dickhardt and Sabo. The Aztec pair of Gomez and Romero, however, could not complete the doubles sweep, falling to the duo of Wang and Whit Livingston, 8-6.
The action resumes on Sunday, as SDSU squares off against Washington on day two of the Torero Challenge, set to begin at 1 p.m. at USD's West Courts.
