MALIBU, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team completed day two of the 2005 Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships on Thursday in Malibu, Calif. In singles action, sophomore transfer Robert Sabo (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) won two matches to advance to the round of 16, while two Aztec doubles teams emerged victorious at Pepperdine University's Ralphs-Stratus Tennis Center.
Early in the day, the Aztecs took care of business in singles play, winning five of six matches in the round of 64. Sabo, along with senior Eugenio Romero (Ensenada, Mexico), juniors Markus Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) and Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) all posted straight-set victories, while senior Stephan Timu (Montreal, Quebec) was extended to three sets before ousting Nick Hegarty of Arizona State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Junior Anthony Gomez (Palm Desert, Calif.) suffered SDSU's only defeat in the round, but battled eighth-seeded Kaes Van't Hof of USC before losing, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Later in the afternoon, Sabo upset fifth-seeded Phillip Gruendler of UCLA, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. However, the four other morning winners for the Aztecs failed to advance.
Meanwhile, in doubles competition, the fifth-seeded tandem of Groh and Timu defeated Matt Fortune and Reyniere Roxas of Loyola Marymount, 8-2, while the duo of Dickhardt and Romero disposed of Mike Meschede and Matt Ozurovich of the University of San Diego, 8-6.
The 2005 Wilson/ITA West Regional continues on Friday with Sabo facing Jonathan Kinsella of Arizona State in singles action beginning at 9:30 a.m. Over in the doubles bracket, Groh and Timu will take on Aaron Badart and Whit Livingston of USC, while Dickhardt and Romero square off against ASU's Kinsella and Ryan McBride, with both matches set to begin at 2 p.m.
