Sept. 13, 2005
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Alexis Solovij (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) has been named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week on Tuesday. Solovij, the 2004 Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, became just the third Aztec to receive the Soccer Buzz honor.
Solovij earned the defensive most valuable player award at the UC Irvine Nike/Holiday Inn Invitational after leading SDSU to consecutive shutouts over UC Riverside (1-0) on Friday and the host Anteaters (2-0) on Sunday. She anchored a defense that allowed only five combined shots, two on goal, in the two games.
A co-captain, Solovij also played well in the team's 3-2 road loss to No. 16 Nebraska last Tuesday, limiting the Cornhuskers to only six shots in the second half.
Solovij, who has started in 44 consecutive matches, has played every minute this season for the 5-2 Aztecs and has helped the defense record four shutouts.
Solovij joins current junior Jennifer Klunder (Oct. 20, 2004) and Shawni Flint (Nov. 5, 2002) as the only SDSU players to earn the national honor.
The Aztecs will play five of their next six games at the SDSU Sports Deck, beginning with a 4 p.m. match Friday versus George Washington (2-3).
