SAN DIEGO - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) named a pair of San Diego State tennis players, Indra Erichsen and Markus Dickhardt, scholar-athletes for the 2005 season. This is the second time Erichsen has been selected by "the governing body of collegiate tennis," while Dickhardt gathers his first such honor.
Erichsen (Husum, Germany) completed her collegiate career this past season after guiding the Aztecs to its 18th NCAA tournament appearance in the championship's 24-year history. The 2005 ITA West Region Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award recipient and four-time all-Mountain West Conference doubles perfomer owns the SDSU record in five different doubles categories, including most individual doubles victories for a career with 85. In addition to her outstanding athletic achievements, she is a three-time MWC academic all-conference selection, a two-time MWC scholar-athlete and a member of the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's At-Large Second Team.
Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) finished his second season on Montezuma Mesa by helping the team win its fifth MWC regular season crown in six years and its third conference tournament title in four years en route to an NCAA tournament berth. The two-time all-MWC singles performer led the team in singles victories with 22 and posted a 12-3 doubles record, tops on the team, with Eugenio Romero. While this is his first time as an ITA scholar-athlete, it is not the first time he has been honored for his performance in the classroom. For the second consecutive year, the 2004 MWC freshman of the year has been named academic all-conference, as well as an all-MWC scholar-athlete.
To earn ITA scholar-athlete status, a student-athlete must earn a varsity letter, have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present institution for a minimum two semesters.
