AZUSA, Calif. - Senior Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) set a conference and school record in the pole vault to lead the San Diego State track and field team at the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions on Saturday. Balentine's first-place clear of 14 feet, 0 ½ inch is also the top collegiate mark in the nation.
It was the third time in four weeks Balentine has bettered both the MWC and school record, while Monica Pacas (Atascadero, Calif.), who already qualified for NCAA regional meet, took third in the event with a jump of 12-6 1/4.
Junior Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) qualified for the NCAA regional with a first-place leap of 5-8 ¾ in the high jump, a mark which moved her into a sixth-place tie (Deanne Johnson, 1984) on the SDSU all-time list.
Sophomore Manhattan College transfer Lisa Naucler (Ljusdal, Sweden) won the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 11.88 seconds) and had a season-best time in the 1,500 (4:35.32) to take second.
Other top-three performances on the day went to senior Jennifer Greene (San Diego) in the triple jump (second place, 36-6 ½), senior Heather Heron (Yakima, Wash.) in the 400-meter hurdles (second, 1:01.64), senior Tori Respass-Parsons (Hayward, Calif.) in the long jump (second, 19-5 ¼), junior Jamillah Titus (American Canyon, Calif.) in the high jump (second, 5-5 ¾), and sophomore Janine Polischuk (Regina Saskatchewan) in the 400 hurdles (third, 1:05.35).
In relay competition, the 400-meter relay team of freshman Brittany Dudley (Oakland, Calif.), Respass-Parsons, Heron and sophomore Vonnie Fulford (Los Angeles) took first with at 47.36 clocking.
The Aztecs will participate in the prestigious Mt. SAC relays this weekend in Walnut, Calif.
