LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 13th-ranked San Diego State water polo team began the day with a 16-4 victory over Cal State Bakersfield, but followed it up with a 9-7 loss to No. 18 Hartwick College Saturday at the Long Beach State Tournament. With the split on day one of the tournament, the Aztecs' record now stands at 12-14 overall.
SDSU jumped out to 2-0 lead after one quarter and extended its lead to 4-0 over Cal State Bakersfield before the Roadrunners could get on the scoreboard. At halftime, the Aztecs found themselves ahead by a score of 7-2, and never looked back from there.
In the third period, SDSU added three more goals to their total and tied a season record for goals in a quarter when they found the back of the net six times in the final stanza. Today marked the third different occasion in which the Aztecs have scored six times in a quarter with the most recent occurrence happening in last week's win over Pomona-Pitzer (April 10).
For the game, Ashley Reta posted a game-high four goals, while Cia Cobb and Susan Stivers scored three times apiece. Rounding out the scoring for the Aztecs were Dominique Delgado's pair of goals along with single goals from Savanah Kelley, Sara Farris, Cassie Zebisch and Stacy Werner.
In game two, SDSU trailed early, falling behind by three after the first quarter. Hartwick's lead remained at three at halftime as both squads scored once in the second period.
In the third period, the Hawks maintained their three-goal advantage with both teams playing to a 3-3 tie.
SDSU made a valiant comeback in the fourth quarter by scoring three goals, but it was not enough as Hartwick added two of its own, including Bronwen Knox's game-winning goal at the 1:39 mark, to give the Hawks the win.
In the loss, Stivers scored three more times, while Delgado contributed two goals and Kelley and Reta chipped in with one apiece.
San Diego State will return to action tomorrow as it takes on Michigan at 9:10 a.m. and Hawaii at 12:40 p.m. Both games will be played at Pool II at Long Beach State.
