WALNUT, Calif. - Marie Nilsson (Kil, Sweden) ran a NCAA regional qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the San Diego State track and field team at the 47th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Friday. Six Aztecs set season-best marks in the first day of the three-day competition.
Nilsson placed seventh of 29 in her first steeplechase of the season with a time of 10 minutes, 51.37 seconds. The senior record-holder in the event (10:23.34) also qualified for the NCAA regionals for the second consecutive season.
Junior Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) finished 14th in the Olympic Development 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 10.40 seconds. The junior, who has already qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the high jump, ran the ninth-fastest time ever recorded by an SDSU athlete.
Sophomore Manhattan transfer Lisa Naucler (Ljusdal, Sweden) continued to impress in her first season as an Aztec with a seventh-place finish in the University/Open 800 (2:11.46), while junior Jackie Duncan set a season-best mark in the same race of 2:14.26.
Freshmen Brittani Dudley (Oakland, Calif.) (11th place) and Sherraine Pencil (Toronto) (19th) ran season-best times of 55.98 and 57.88, respectively, in the 400, and sophomore Celeste Tyson (Austin, Texas) bettered her season-best time in the 1,500 by more than nine seconds (4:40.03).
The meet continues tomorrow at Mt. San Antonio Junior College with the middle distance events taking center stage. The event concludes on Sunday.
