FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Seniors Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) and Erin Asay (San Diego) finished 10th and 12th in the pole vault in an elite field of 17 competitors for San Diego State at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship meet on Saturday. Balentine and Asay both cleared 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches in the event, which took place at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

"I'm very proud of both Shayla (Balentine) and Erin (Asay)," said assistant coach Rich Fox. "We set a good foundation for the outdoor season and we are looking forward to bigger and better things. We expect to improve in our placing at the (NCAA) outdoor meet."

Although Balentine and Asay each cleared 13-1 1/2, Balentine earned the 10th-place spot because it took her only one attempt to make the previous height (12-7 1/2), while Asay cleared the height in three attempts.

Amy Linnen of Kansas won the pole vault with a jump of 14-1 1/4.

Balentine and Asay will join the rest of the Aztecs when they host their lone outdoor meet of the year, the Aztec Classic, on Saturday atop the SDSU Sports Deck. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
