SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - For the second consecutive day, the 10th-ranked San Diego State water polo team split two games at the Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. In the first game, the Aztecs defeated nationally ranked UC Irvine and in the second contest lost to No. 6 Indiana. With the split, SDSU's record now stands at 4-6 overall.

Against 16th-ranked UC Irvine, SDSU led 2-1 after one period of play and 4-3 at the halfway point. In the third quarter, the Aztecs broke it open, outscoring the Anteaters 4-1 and taking an 8-4 lead going into the fourth quarter.

As the final period got underway, the game became interesting as UC Irvine scored four goals to close the gap, but SDSU scored two of its own to claim the 10-8 victory.

The Aztecs received five goals from Rachel Serna, two from Ashley Reta and one apiece from Savanah Kelley, Elana Cervantes and Becca Ur.

Serna's five goals marked the first time this season that SDSU has had two five-goal scorers in consecutive games. Stacy Werner recorded five in the Feb. 25 overtime loss to UC Santa Barbara.

Later in the day, the Aztecs controlled the first half of the game against Indiana taking a 4-2 lead after two periods. But the Hoosiers answered back with two goals in the third to knot the game at four apiece.

In the final stanza, Indiana outscored SDSU, 3-2, to win the game by the final tally of 7-6.

Serna notched three more goals, giving her eight for the day, while Werner, Cervantes and Ur pitched in with a goal each.

The Aztecs will conclude the Gaucho Invitational tomorrow with a game against Michigan in a battle for 11th place. The game is scheduled for a 10:30 start at Campus Pool.
