IRVINE, Calif. - San Diego State sophomore Caitlin Friedhoff won the 500-yard freestyle event during the Distance Meet at the 25th Annual UCI/Ayres Hotel & Suites Invitational. Overall, SDSU finished the Distance Meet in third place with 72 points, behind UC Irvine (290 pts.) and Illinois (135 pts.).
Friedhoff swam a 4:57.34 in the 500 freestyle, both career and season highs, in an event in which four other Aztecs placed in the top-20. Freshman Adrienne Conte came in 10th with a time of 5:18.38, followed by sophomores Emily Parker (12th, 5:19.30) and Stella Karoly (16th, 5:24.33).
Earlier in the day, the Aztecs came up short in defending last year's Sprints Meet title. SDSU finished the meet in sixth place with a total of 80 points, but saw nine personal, season-best times established.
Junior Emily Schmied set personal, season-highs in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.00) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.74). In the 200-yard individual medley, the junior finished in fifth with a time of 2:11.65, the third-fastest time of the season.
The San Diego State divers were also in action as the three-meter competition took place following the two meets. Both freshmen divers, Joelle Felton and Kathleen Heuring set career highs and made the cut after six dives. Felton finished in sixth place with a score of 377.10 and Heuring tallied 359.15 points good for tenth place. Felton's score was the highest for an Aztec diver this season since Heuring set the mark at the UNLV Winter Invitational (Dec. 18) with a score of 336.90.
San Diego State will complete the two-day UCI/Ayres Hotel & Suites Invitational tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the relay meet and second half of the diving competition taking place.
