SAN DIEGO - Three San Diego State swimmers set career highs during the first day of competition at the UNLV Winter Invitational being held at the Buchanan Natatorium on Saturday. The competition features 10 teams and will continue through Monday.
In the preliminary round of the 500-yard freestyle event, both sophomore Emily Parker and junior Emily Schmied set career highs in the 56-person field. Parker turned in a time of 5:05.83 and Schmied finished with a mark of 5:07.81. Sophomore Caitlin Friedhoff completed the event with a season-high time of 5:16.85.
During the finals of the 500-yard freestyle, Parker turned in her second-fastest time of the season (5:05.99) while finishing in fifth place. Friedhoff swam a career-high 5:15.08 to finish in the top-20 and senior Stephanie Chambers set a season-best time with her 5:15.09 performance.
Other individuals who established season-highs were Schmied with her 2:11.27 in the 200-yard individual medley and Friedhoff's 24.80 in the 50-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Aztecs had two teams finish in the top-20. The 200-yard free quartet of Samantha Peters, Tamarah Binek, Schmied and Friedhoff, placed 10th with a time of 1:40.25, while Rachelle Denaro, Chambers, Katie Smith and Adrienne Conte swam a 1:44.19, good for 19th place.
Freshman diver Kathleen Heuring finished in the ninth place with a career-high score of 336.90. Her previous high of 328.25 came on Nov. 5, at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
San Diego State continues competition at the UNLV Winter Invitational tomorrow and Monday. The final score of the dual-meet between the Aztecs and Rebels will be known at the conclusion of the invitational.
