SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's crew team will participate in its annual Million Meter Row-A-Thon on ergs at the entrance of Cox Arena on Nov. 19. The athletes will start rowing at 4 p.m., as men's basketball fans enter Cox Arena for their season-opening game against UC Santa Barbara, and will continue on the rowing machines until they reach 1 million meters (over 600 miles).
The team is coming off a successful fall season in which the varsity eight boat finished fifth of 50 boats at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. The varsity eight boat also took first in the San Diego Fall Classic, while the novice eight earned first-place finishes in the Race for Cure and the San Diego Fall Classic.
The team is accepting sponsorships and pledges to supplement its operating budget. All donations will be used to purchase equipment such as rowing boats and oars. The average rowing shell costs approximately $25,000 and one oar costs $300, meaning an eight-person boat, including the shell and eight oars, will cost around $27,400.
The crew team has set a goal of raising $20,000 in this year's row-a-thon after raising more than $15,000 a year ago. Donations are tax deductible and will be accepted by mail or in person at the row-a-thon. Checks should be made payable to Aztec Athletics Foundation-Women's Crew and can be mailed to Department of Athletics-Women's Crew, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182. All donations are appreciated.
