NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The San Diego State women's lightweight eight boat placed second at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport Beach, Calif. on Sunday afternoon.
The lightweight boat, consisting of juniors Amanda Briggs, Vanessa Kenley, Coby Vandenberg and Rachael Vrooman, sophomores Jenny Allen, Caitlin Carrion (Coxswain), Deidra Little and Lynda Shuker, and freshman Emily Spikell, completed the 4,600-meter (2.9 miles) course in 17 minutes, 33 seconds, trailing only Stanford (17:32). However, a yacht crossed the path of the Aztecs costing the boat valuable seconds.
"It's unfortunate," said second-year head coach Jennifer Zebroski. "It (the yacht) probably cost us 10 seconds, but I'm still happy with the second-place finish."
In open four boat competition, the SDSU "B" boat (20:23) and the "A" boat (20:34) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 13-team race. Sacramento State "A" won the event with an 18:59 clocking.
The Aztec open eight boats took sixth ("A," 17:33), ninth ("B," 18:05) and 16th ("C," 19:00) in 23-team event won by USC "A" (16:39), while the SDSU frosh/novice eight boats placed sixth ("A," 18:38) and seventh ("B," 19:03) out of 26 teams, behind the first-place UCLA "A" team (17:20).
"I was happy with the good showing in the open eight race," added Zebroski. "To have the 'B' team finish third behind the USC and UCLA junior varsity teams is very encouraging."
"I'm happy," Zebroski said of the overall competition. "We have lots of rowers and plenty of depth. I think we will stay competitive throughout the year."
SDSU will complete its fall racing schedule on Sunday in the San Diego Fall Classic hosted by the San Diego Rowing Club at the Coggeshall Rowing Center.
