MALIBU, Calif. - Two San Diego State men's tennis players won their second and third round singles matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships at Pepperdine University.
Junior Dontia Haynes defeated the tournament's No. 9 seed Andy Colombo of Arizona State in the second round by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Benedikt Stronk followed up with a three set victory (7-6, 6-7, 6-2) over Arizona's Tim Mullane.
The Aztecs continued their good play when senior Armando Carrascosa used a 6-1, 6-1 effort to beat UC Santa Barbara's Ivan d'Argence to move on to the third round.
During third round play, Haynes advanced to the quarterfinals when Pepperdine's Pedro Rico withdrew due to injury. Carrascosa earned his spot in the next round when he downed UC Irvine's Brian Morton in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Through three rounds, Carrascosa has lost a total of six games.
In other singles action, sophomores Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh both fell in the second round. Dickhardt was forced to retire midway through the first set (5-2) against San Diego's Nic Beuque and Groh lost to the No. 5 seed from Southern California, Johan Berg. In the third round, Stronk was defeated by UCLA's Alberto Francis, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
The third round of doubles continued as well and due to Dickhardt's retirement in the singles draw, he and Haynes were forced to withdraw, giving UCLA's Francis/Kwinta the victory. SDSU's other doubles team of Groh/Stronk had their match postponed and will take place Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The quarterfinal round of the second leg of the college grand slam begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Malibu, Calif.
