SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Four-time Aztec All-American Tonette Dyer finished 16th in the semifinals of the 400 meters Thursday evening at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Sacramento, Calif.
Dyer, who needed to finish in the top four in her heat to move on to the finals, finished eighth with a time of 53.70 seconds. Former University of Texas standout Sanya Richards won the heat and posted the fastest semifinal time of the evening, running a time of 50.34.
Dyer, who completed her collegiate eligibility at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June, will vie for an Olympic bid in the 200 meters on Friday. Dyer is seeded third in the event with a time of 22.34. The top three in each heat and the next four fastest times will advance to the finals, which are slated for Saturday afternoon.
Aztec Hall of Fame member Marla Runyan will also compete on Friday. Runyan, who earned her second consecutive trip to the Summer Olympic Games after placing second in the 5,000 meters on Monday, will compete in the 1,500-meter semifinal at 8 p.m. She was eighth in the 1,500 meters at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and is seeded fourth in the field at this year's U.S. Olympic Trials.
