SAN DIEGO - The American Water Polo Coaches Association has named Holly Hartzell a first- team All-American in a vote of association members.
Hartzell has now recorded her fourth straight All-American season. In 2001, she was named a second-team All-American after an initial collegiate season that ranked as one of the best in SDSU history, scoring 90 goals. In 2002, Hartzell followed up with a sophomore campaign that landed her third-team All-American recognition. And in 2003, Hartzell led the Aztecs with 63 goals and earned second-team All-American recognition.
Hartzell led the Aztecs in 2004 in both ends of the pool with 57 goals and 55 steals. She, also, posted the Aztecs' highest shooting percentage, .456, and her 109 ejections drawn were over half of the team total.
Hartzell ranks number one on the school's career scoring chart with 278 goals. The old record was 235. She is the only Aztec to rank in the top three of career goals, assists, and steals. Hartzell has received first team all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors for four consecutive years. She also was the first Aztec to record 60 or more goals in three seasons.
Hartzell excelled both in and out of the pool as she was named in 2003 to the American Water Polo Coaches Association's all academic team with a 3.26 GPA and earned MPSF all- academic honors.
Hartzell was also a finalist for the Peter J. Cutino Award given to the most outstanding collegiate female water polo player in the United States during the 2004 season.
Behind Hartzell's efforts, the Aztecs posted a 26-9 record, the second most wins in school history.
