SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) earned All-America honors for the second straight night and for the fourth time in her career, coming in fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.68 at the 2004 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas. Dyer trailed event winner Arkansas' LaShaunte'a Moore (22.37) by just 0.31 seconds, while only 0.13 separated the second through fourth-place finishers at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Combined with her fifth place in the 100 meters on Friday, Dyer is now one of two Aztecs to earn All-America honors four times or more in their career at SDSU, joining Laura DeSnoo (1982, 84-86). Dyer was an All-American once in both 2003, as a member of the team's eighth-place 4x400 relay, and in 2002, with her ninth place in the 400 meters.
Dyer also became just the third Aztec to garner All-America honors in two different events in one season. DeSnoo was an All-American in both the shot put and discus in 1984, while current SDSU senior Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) turned the trick in 2003, as a member of the team's 4x400 relay and in the 400 hurdles.
As a team, San Diego State jumped two spots from Friday to 27th with nine points, posting its best-ever team finish in Aztec head coach Rahn Sheffield's 13-year tenure. A year ago, SDSU also tallied nine team points, but ended up coming in tied for 29th.
UCLA won the team title by just one point over LSU (69-68), while Nebraska was third with 58 points.
